AN EXCERPT

Mother’s presence smothers the honeyed glow of dawn when she enters my bedchamber. Her dark dress juts out with impatience at her angular shoulders until I rise to join her. When she drapes a sleeveless frock over my white cotton shift and tugs the fabric over my slight frame, everything goes blissfully womb-like until she digs her fingertips into my collarbone a moment too long.
