A restless wind whispers through Crawnley village, bending the corn stalks into long arches and compelling the men to take up their sharpened scythes for the autumnal reaping. Clasping empty wicker baskets, they fan out across the field, where the hot, dry corn weather of summer drapes a cloying veil over the countryside.
