AN EXCERPT
© MARY RAJOTTE
Frames fashioned from whittled bones twine-wrapped at the corners adorn every inch. Some wide, others narrow, hang in rows that stretch to the ceiling. The oldest sit the highest, each with braided threads of various lengths secured to the framework with a simple knot. Newer ones have a square of rough burlap pulled taut and tacked to the back. But there are no bright blossoms or vividly stitched fronds like the handiwork of the other women in the village. Instead, insidious vines strangle the edges of the fabric and hard, blackened berries handsewn into thorny barbs glimmer like the watchful eyes of some leering creature.
