Grandmother’s hair has the sheen of a raven’s wing, a dark halo that stirs against her pillow with each labored breath. When I brush it from her feverish brow and a few loose strands come away in my hand, Mother appears at my shoulder.

“When she snipped my first few tendrils and threw them on the fire, they shrivelled into a wilted caterpillar. Yours burned in a flash of crimson. She was so proud. So relieved knowing you’d carry on our bloodline after her. After me, as we all are.”
