We\u2019d just read his story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tor.com\/2017\/04\/12\/dark-warm-heart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><strong>Dark Warm Heart<\/strong><\/a> in <strong>Best Horror of the Year Vol. 10 from Ellen Datlow<\/strong> so it was pretty cool to talk to him and ask how he came up with the idea and find out more about his writing process.<\/p>\n<p>One thing I loved about Dark Warm Heart was the way Rich brought in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cryptopia.us\/site\/2010\/02\/wendigo-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Algonquin legend of the <strong>Wendigo<\/strong><\/a>. I\u2019d already heard about the creature a lot growing up. It\u2019s still a popular legend here, especially in Northern Ontario, so seeing the creature mentioned in Rich\u2019s story was a thrill.<\/p>\n<p>I also loved the way he <strong>brought the lore<\/strong> into his story. It\u2019s no secret that I love basing my stories on <strong>superstitions<\/strong>, but I often struggle with how to bring in the lore without too much telling, in the form of some wise character coming in with a,<strong> \u201cWell, you know, Bob\u2026I once heard this about this particular superstition that is just like this.\u201d<\/strong> There\u2019s nothing worse than a know-it-all character pulling your readers out of the story, so this tale was the <strong>perfect illustration<\/strong> for me that I\u2019ll keep in mind moving forward with my own work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My story<\/strong> is one of the next ones being critiqued in class.
