THE WEEKLY BREW: Notes from a (Multi-tasking) Word Witch

It’s only been two weeks of my new weekly schedule (alternating between one main project per week), but I like what I’ve seen. I made steady project on both the new novella and final novel revisions. But…I might still need to rethink things.

My goal for the rest of the year is to:

  • Finish and start querying the novel
  • Outline another novella
  • Write a complete draft of both novellas
  • Maybe….outline another novel (and…start writing it?)

Let’s say that’s approx. 160k words I need to write. There are 17 weeks left in the year (taking out the week of Christmas).

That would mean I’d need 9411 words per week. I try to take weekends off. So, spread over 5 days, that’s 1882 words. Totally doable!

Except…as I said above, I alternate between projects. So that’s only 8 weeks of writing. Which would be 4k per day. That’s a lot. I mean, I can do it. I’ve done that much and more in the past. But there’s also…freelance work, marketing, breaks for lunch & dinner. Time to just decompress.

I want to be realistic and not create such lofty goals that I’m setting myself up for feeling like a failure when I can’t meet them. So I’d either need to adjust my schedule and write every day, slotting in revisions and outlining as I can, or I need to pare down my projects.

Still not sure what I’ll do…but for now, I’ll just keep trying different things to see what works best for me.
