Recognition for The Culling

One of the coolest things that can happen to you as a horror writer is to get noticed by Ellen Datlow. Ellen has been editing books for over 35 years. When she likes something, it’s a thrill to both new and established authors alike.

Every year, Ellen puts together her Best Horror of the Year anthology. Only a select few stories make it into the book. BUT Ellen also compiles an honorable mentions list. To have your story noticed in any way, shape or form by Ellen is an incredible honor.

So I was pleasantly surprised (okay…I WAS OVER THE MOON) to discover my story, The Culling, made it onto her recommended list for Best Horror of the Year Vol. 11!!

I set a bunch of goals at the beginning of the year. When I submitted my story to her to be considered for the anthology, I told myself even just making the recommended reading list would be an incredible feat – and I did it – and I’m so pumped about it!

Not gonna lie, I was a little intimidated to send my story to her. But I also LOVE this story and my main goal was to have as many people read it as possible. If I can gain a few new readers, I will be genuinely satisfied, and if anything else, this gives me the boost I needed to continue pushing myself (after a few rough weeks where I felt I was floundering).

Never give up on your dreams, people! And never be afraid to shout about your accomplishments.
