Progress is Progress

So, I finally started outlining my novella idea, one I’ve had for a while, a story that I sort of tried writing last year but didn’t get very far with it. Knowing Camp NaNo was coming up again, I figured yeah, I can just polish off my outline, change things a bit and work on it in July.

Oh, how wrong I was!

I realized pretty quickly that it was going to take longer than I thought to rework it into a more modern setting. That also meant changing my main character, which meant rethinking their character type, their flaws & motivations, and the rest of the cast. So…Camp NaNo is still happening, but I’ll be using it to work on this outline.

I decided to bust out some old books (First Draft in 30 Days and From First Draft to Finished Novel – both by Karen S. Wiesner), but mostly I’m using that for the daily schedule and the formatted story outline. I’ll still be using Save The Cat Writes A Novel by Jessica Brody for my story structure because yes, I’m still very-much a plotter, especially when it comes to longer works.

So far, things are very preliminary. I have some new ideas, plus my old story, which I’ll combine into this new entity – which is a very fitting moniker for the type of story I’m writing 😉

Alongside that, when the ideas stop flowing, I’ll be working on Issue 7 of Frightmarish Zine, which means I’ll be dusting off two stories I started working on earlier in the year, finishing and editing those. It all sounds so easy, doesn’t it? But as we all know, writing is never a straight path. Despite all the twists and turns, I’m making progress, even if it’s a little slower than I anticipated, and I’m okay with that.
